Metal mesh without surface treatment

When choosing materials or alloys without protective surface treatment, these metal meshes must be handled extra carefully as the surface layer of the metal mesh can be discolored by improper handling, for example from the natural oil on our hands. The metal mesh must always be stored indoors until they are to be used indoors. If care instructions are desired, contact us for further information.

COPPER

Copper is reddish in color and has a clear luster. Copper is a semi-precious metal and resists most oxidizing acids, is relatively soft, easy to stretch, shape and press. Copper is used partly unalloyed and partly as a base metal in copper alloys such as brass, Nordic gold and bronze. Alloys with copper get a patina over time depending on the environment in which it is placed, which can also act as a protection against external attacks. As the color changes relatively quickly in humid air, especially in the presence of air pollutants, we recommend copper alloys only for indoor use. If care instructions are desired, contact us for further information.

All metals are 100% recyclable.

Copper occurs in different forms and concentrations. It is found in seawater, rivers, plants, the earth and even in pure metallic form, and is the first metal that mankind learned to process. Copper has been of great importance to Swedish history and Swedish culture.

BRASS

The color of brass varies with the copper content. It is yellow when the copper content is between 49 and 76% and slightly redder the higher the copper content. Most commonly, brass consists of about 65% copper and about 35% zinc.

As brass contains copper, it is relatively soft and gets a patina over time depending on the environment in which it is placed. Since the color changes relatively quickly in humid air, especially in the presence of air pollutants, we recommend brass only for indoor use. If care instructions are desired, contact us for further information.

The brass has a low melting point and is easy to remelt and reuse. All metals are 100% recyclable.

STAINLESS STEEL

Stainless steel has a faint gray color, and like all metals, it is absolutely finest when illuminated. Steel is a malleable alloy consisting mainly of iron. Coal is the most important alloying element and is always included in varying amounts in steel. All metals are 100% recyclable.

Most of our metal nets are available in both stainless steel AISI 302 & 304 but also in stainless steel AISI 316. For outdoor use and in humid environments, we recommend AISI 316 for the best long-term durability. If care instructions are desired, contact us for further information.

If a plated metal mesh, oxidised or lacquered metal mesh is desired, it is usually produced from ordinary steel, which is only for indoor use. If you want to use a lacquered metal net outdoors, pre-galvanized metal nets are suitable.

Pahlfer aluminium

ALUMINIUM

Aluminum is a soft light metal that is silvery to gray in color. The recycling process for aluminum is relatively straight forward. Unalloyed aluminum is melted down and recast. Alloy aluminum undergoes in some cases a cleaning before melting and casting.

Aluminum wire mesh is very resistant to atmospheric corrosion. In contact with other metals, corrosion can occur, if the environment is damp or if the protective oxide surface is worn away due to friction. If care instructions are desired, contact us for further information. The anodizing reduces its pH sensitivity while increasing its abrasion resistance. When recycling aluminum, only a very small part of the energy required to produce the original metal is needed. All metals are 100% recyclable.

Pahlfer – Spiral Nordic Gold

Nordic Gold

The material Nordic Gold is not similar to gold but almost identical to the slightly yellower brass in its appearance. The alloy does not contain gold but consists mostly of copper and a small amount of aluminum. As it contains copper, we recommend Nordic Gold for indoor use because the material gets a patina over time, especially in humid environments. If care instructions are desired, contact us for further information.

Some of the advantages of Nordic gold compared to similar alloys are, among other things, that the surface is more resistant to corrosion because it has a little aluminum in the alloy. The Swedish ten kronor and later also the Euro coins are made of Nordic gold.

All metals are 100% recyclable.

BRONZE

Bronze has a warm caramel-colored tone and is the name of reddish alloys with copper. It is sometimes very similar in color to the slightly redder brass.

Compared to brass (copper and zinc), bronze (copper and tin) is more difficult to process, but has better strength and corrosion resistance. Bronze has historically been used for casting weapons and ornaments as well as in the manufacture of coins.

Depending on the environment in which the bronze net is placed in and on the air’s composition of salt, moisture and sunlight, bronze will change from light shades to darker patina, after which we recommend bronze for indoor environments. If care instructions are desired, contact us for further information.

All metals are 100% recyclable.

STEEL

Ordinary steel rusts when attacked by moisture if it is not surface-treated. It is often used as a material in our rigid metal nets that are to be surface treated, such as in powder coating and plating. If care instructions are desired, contact us for further information.
Pre-galvanized metal mesh is a more suitable alternative when you want a powder-coated surface on metal mesh for outdoor environments. Otherwise there is a great risk that the metal mesh will rust because the surface treatment can never cover 100% where the wires of the metal mesh overlap.

WEATHERING STEEL

The weathering steel, often called corten steel, contains a chemical composition that increases its resistance to corrosion, and like all metals, the weathering steel is 100% recyclable. The steel is made to be able to rust in humid environments whereupon it develops a patina that acts as a protective layer to prevent corrosion. This material is suitable for many applications in unpainted condition. Over time, the weathering steel will go from the steel’s original gray color, to yellow-orange, deep rust-orange and finally to a dark brown color.
Weathering steel should be used for outdoor use as the protective patina formed on the steel is rust that can stain on nearby materials. Although the patina protects against corrosion, the stainless steel also has its limits. In humid and subtropical climates, there is a risk that the patina will not suffice but the steel will then continue to corrode. If care instructions are desired, contact us for further information.
